What is dandruff and why does it occur?

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes the skin to flake, forming visible white scales.

Dandruff occurs due to the accelerated cell renewal of the scalp.  Normally, the cells of the scalp skin renew themselves and shed every two weeks in the form of very small flakes that are not visible. But for some reasons that we will tell you about later, the cell renewal process can be faster than normal, and that is why groups of dead cells form on the scalp.

Hormonal changes can influence dandruff. However, it does not seem to be related to a person's mood, although it can worsen during periods of stress. An imbalance in the microbial flora of the scalp can also be a factor that triggers it.

It may also be related to the reaction and sensitivity to some products for hair care.

If your dandruff is dry, it may be due to a very harsh shampoo, showers with water with a lot of limescale or aggressive hairstyles. Many people notice that dandruff appears after a vacation with many hours in pools with chlorinated water, long exposure to the sun, and hair washing that is too frequent.

The main cause of oily dandruff is excess oil and the growth of very small fungi. When the scalp has a lot of oil, the fungi reproduce and cause inflammation. This inflammation causes the skin to flake.

Dandruff usually starts after puberty, because during adolescence there are more hormones and the body produces more oil (due to greater activity in the glands that produce oil). For this same reason, it is rare for dandruff to occur in children and older adults, although it is common in adulthood.

Dandruff is more common in men than in women, and people with immune system problems or nervous system diseases such as Parkinson's are also more prone to it.

How do you know if you have dry or oily dandruff?

The main sign of dandruff is the white flakes visible in the hair.

To know if you have dry dandruff:

  • The flakes are small and thin and fall off easily,.
  • The hair looks dull, rough, and lackluster.
  • It is usually the most common type of dandruff.

To know if you have oily dandruff:

  • The flakes are larger and thicker.
  • They tend to stick to the hair roots.
  • It usually affects the oiliest areas of the head, such as the forehead or the nape.
  • It causes flaking, inflammation, and itching on the scalp.

What is the most effective shampoo for dandruff?

Nowadays, there are several anti-dandruff treatments that can effectively prevent and eliminate dandruff. It is advisable to wash your hair with a natural anti-dandruff shampoo that is gentle and helps reduce oil and the buildup of dead cells on the scalp. This type of shampoo contains organic ingredients and active ingredients that will boost its effectiveness against dandruff while being kind to your skin.

We also recommend using exfoliating masks that, in addition to preventing dandruff, condition and nourish the hair.
